Although some things like family history can’t be changed, certain modifications in lifestyle have been shown to decrease chances of breast cancer.  Here are some easy tips to lower your risk from The Mayo Clinic:

Limit alcohol intake – Based on research done between the link to alcohol consumption and breast cancer, the general recommendation is to limit yourself to limit yourself to less than 1 drink a day.

Don’t smoke – There is increasing evidence that suggest that there is a link between smoking and breast cancer, particularly among peri-menopausal women.

Maintain a healthy weight – Obesity can increase your risk for breast cancer, particularly if it happens after menopause. Eating a healthy diet, like a Mediterranean diet supplemented, has been shown to help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Stay physically active – Exercise helps maintain a healthy weight which, in turn, decreases your risk for breast cancer.

NBCF offers an informative video series called “Beyond the Shock”.  This is a free, comprehensive, online guide to understanding breast cancer. It is a resource for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, a place for loved ones to gain a better understanding of the disease, and a tool for doctors to share information. The first one is included below and the series continues on NBCF site.
